CAPA’s AST program is launching Octave, a summer music mentoring initiative providing free music lessons for elementary and middle school students in Howard County who are passionate about music but lack access to formal instruction.

Led by volunteer high school mentors, the program runs mid-June to August (6–8 weeks), offering weekly lessons virtually or at up to two high school locations. Octave fosters musical growth, builds community, and empowers high school mentors with leadership experience.

Octave connects young musicians with high school student mentors from HCPSS band and orchestra groups to offer weekly music lessons at no cost. The program is designed to help students develop their skills, build confidence, and foster a love for music in a supportive environment. Our mentors can help with nearly every aspect of learning, from just learning the basics to mastering audition material, refining previously learned skills, helping students prepare for the next school year, and guiding practice with sight reading new music.
